Weeknight Salisbury Steak

Posted on August 6, 2025

Absolutely! A Weeknight Salisbury Steak is pure comfort food—quick, hearty, and made with pantry staples. Think juicy beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom-onion gravy. It’s like a fancy hamburger-meets-meatloaf in gravy—and it comes together in under 40 minutes!

🍽️ Weeknight Salisbury Steak

Servings: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25–30 minutes
Total Time: ~35–40 minutes

🛒 Ingredients:

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is perfect)

  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for richness)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

🔪 Instructions:

1. Make the Steak Patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt & pepper.

  • Mix gently and form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

2. Brown the Steaks

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a splash of oil.

  • Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

  • Remove and set aside.

3. Make the Gravy

  • In the same pan, add butter, sliced onions, and mushrooms. Cook for 5–6 minutes until soft and golden.

  • Sprinkle in the flour and stir for 1 minute to cook the raw taste off.

  • Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire, and Dijon if using. Simmer until slightly thickened (2–3 minutes).

4. Simmer It All Together

  • Return the patties to the skillet and nestle them into the gravy.

  • Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through and gravy is thick and flavorful.

🍽️ Serve With:

  • Mashed potatoes (classic choice!)

  • Egg noodles, rice, or buttered peas

  • Steamed green beans or roasted carrots

🔧 Tips:

  • Want a smoother gravy? Chop the onions finely or sauté longer.

  • You can swap in ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

  • Leftovers reheat beautifully for next-day lunches.
