Turkish bread recipe

Posted on April 23, 2025
Yesss!  Making Turkish bread at home is such a vibe — soft, fluffy, slightly chewy with that iconic golden top, and perfect for dipping, wrapping, or just tearing apart while it’s warm. There are a few types (like Pide, Bazlama, and Simit) — but here’s a classic version of Turkish Flatbread (Pide-style) that’s super easy and SO good:

🇹🇷 Turkish Flatbread (Pide) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant dry yeast

  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (not hot)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Topping (for that signature look):
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon milk (egg wash)

  • Sesame seeds or nigella seeds (optional but traditional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate Yeast (if not using instant):

    • Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

    • If using instant yeast, skip this and just mix it in with the flour.

  2. Make the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and instant yeast (if using).

    • Add water and olive oil, then mix and knead for 8–10 minutes until soft and elastic.

    • Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled.

  3. Shape the Bread:

    • Punch down the dough and divide into 2 pieces.

    • Roll each into an oval or round flatbread shape (about ½ inch thick).

    • Place on a parchment-lined baking tray.

  4. Add the Signature Look:

    • Brush the top with the egg wash.

    • Use your fingers or the back of a knife to make a criss-cross or diamond pattern (gently pressing in lines).

    • Sprinkle with sesame seeds or nigella seeds if using.

  5. Bake:

    • Bake in a preheated oven at 475°F (245°C) for about 10–12 minutes or until golden and puffed.

    • Optional: for extra soft bread, brush lightly with butter or olive oil when it comes out of the oven.

How to Serve:

  • With dips like hummus or baba ganoush

  • Wrapped around kebab or grilled meat

  • Stuffed with cheese and herbs

  • Or just with olive oil + za’atar

Want the thicker Bazlama (like a Turkish naan) or the sesame-ringed Simit version next? Let’s make all the breads!
