Texas Turtle Sheet Cake

Here’s a rich, indulgent, and Southern-style Texas Turtle Sheet Cake — think classic chocolate sheet cake loaded with caramel, pecans, and chocolate. It’s like a brownie, a cake, and a turtle candy all in one pan!


🍫🐢 Texas Turtle Sheet Cake

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Mixture:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup water

Toppings:

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans

  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips


Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13×18-inch sheet pan (or jelly roll pan).

  2. Make chocolate mixture:

    • In a saucepan, bring butter, cocoa powder, and water to a boil. Remove from heat once fully melted and combined.

  3. Mix cake batter:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.

    • Add sour cream, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

    • Pour in the warm chocolate mixture and stir until fully combined.

  4. Bake:

    • Pour batter into the greased sheet pan and spread evenly.

    • Bake for 20–22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  5. Add toppings while warm:

    • Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips and chopped pecans over the hot cake.

    • Drizzle warm caramel sauce generously over the top.

  6. Cool & serve:

    • Let the cake cool slightly before slicing. It can be served warm (gooier) or fully cooled (firmer slices).


🔁 Optional Add-ons:

  • Use a salted caramel sauce for contrast.

  • Add a thin layer of fudge frosting under the caramel for even more decadence.

  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for full “turtle sundae” effect.
