Posted on June 7, 2025

Here’s a delicious, hearty twist on a classic comfort food: Texas Toast Sloppy Joes! Imagine thick, buttery toast piled high with saucy ground beef and melted cheese. It’s messy, satisfying, and easy to make—a perfect weeknight dinner or game-day treat.

🍞 Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

📋 Ingredients (Serves 4):

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste (optional, for richer flavor)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toast:

  • 8 slices frozen Texas toast (garlic or plain, your choice)
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: sliced pickles, jalapeños, or a fried egg for topping

🍳 Instructions:

  1. Cook the Texas Toast:
    • Preheat oven and bake Texas toast according to package instructions until golden and crisp.
  2. Make the Sloppy Joe Filling:
    • In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
    • Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté 3–4 minutes until soft.
    • Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard.
    • Simmer 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Season to taste.
  3. Assemble:
    • Place cooked Texas toast on a baking sheet.
    • Spoon a generous amount of sloppy joe mixture onto each slice.
    • Sprinkle cheese on top.
  4. Melt the Cheese:
    • Return to oven and broil for 2–3 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve open-faced or sandwich two pieces together for an ultra-indulgent version.
    • Add pickles or jalapeños for a zesty crunch if desired.

🔄 Variations:

  • Spicy kick: Add hot sauce or chipotle to the meat mix.
  • Low-carb: Serve over roasted sweet potato slices or in lettuce wraps.
  • Sloppy Joe Casserole: Layer toast in a dish, add meat and cheese, then bake!

Would you like a kid-friendly version or a way to turn this into party sliders?
