Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

Step 1: Make the Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the cocoa powder and the boiling water, mixing until smooth. Bring it to a boil for a few seconds, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  6. Add the wet mixture to the cocoa mixture, stirring just until everything is combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top.
  8. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool slightly while you make the frosting.
Step 2: Make the Frosting
  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and milk, and bring it to a gentle boil, stirring frequently.
  2. Once the mixture is boiling, remove it from the heat and stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. If you want to add chopped nuts, you can stir them into the frosting at this point, or simply sprinkle them on top after you spread the frosting.
  4. Immediately pour the frosting over the warm cake, spreading it out evenly to cover the entire surface.
Step 3: Serve
  1. Let the cake sit for about 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set slightly before slicing into squares.
  2. Serve and enjoy the moist, chocolatey goodness!

Tips:

  • For a richer frosting: You can use heavy cream instead of whole milk to make the frosting more decadent and smooth.
  • If you prefer a thicker cake: You can double the recipe and bake it in a larger pan, though you’ll need to adjust the baking time accordingly.
  • Storage: This cake can be stored at room temperature, covered, for about 3-4 days. You can also refrigerate it for up to a week if you prefer a chilled version.

This Texas Sheet Cake is the perfect dessert for family gatherings, potlucks, or any time you want a large, easy-to-make cake that everyone will love. The combination of the moist chocolate cake and rich frosting is just unbeatable!
