SWEDISH MEATBALL NOODLE BAKE

Here’s a cozy, creamy recipe for a Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake — tender meatballs, egg noodles, and a rich sauce baked to bubbly perfection!

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1/2 lb ground pork (optional, or use all beef)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice

  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil, for frying

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 cup heavy cream or sour cream

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Other:

  • 12 oz egg noodles, cooked and drained

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)


Instructions:

  1. Make the Meatballs:
    In a bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes. Add ground meats, onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix gently but thoroughly.
    Shape into 1-inch meatballs.

  2. Cook Meatballs:
    Heat butter/oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the Sauce:
    In the same skillet, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until golden. Gradually whisk in beef broth and cream. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.

  4. Combine:
    Add meatballs and cooked egg noodles to the sauce. Stir gently to coat.

  5. Bake:
    Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer mixture to a greased casserole dish. Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned on top.

  6. Serve:
    Garnish with chopped parsley and enjoy!


Tips:

  • Swap heavy cream for sour cream for a tangier sauce.

  • Add sautéed mushrooms or peas for extra veggies.

  • For a richer flavor, brown the meatballs thoroughly.
