Here’s a rich and comforting Steak and Beef Pie recipe — tender chunks of beef in a savory gravy, wrapped in golden, flaky pastry. Perfect for cozy dinners or special occasions.


🥧 Steak and Beef Pie Recipe

🥩 Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 1 ½ – 2 lbs (700–900 g) stewing beef (like chuck), cut into 1-inch cubes

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup beef broth

  • 1/2 cup red wine (or extra broth)

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

  • 1 carrot, diced (optional)

For the pastry:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade), thawed if frozen

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)


🔪 Instructions:

1. Make the filling:

  • Season beef with salt and pepper. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Brown beef in batches. Remove and set aside.

  • In the same pot, sauté onion and garlic until soft (about 3–4 mins).

  • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.

  • Add wine (if using), scraping the bottom of the pot, then add broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire, thyme, bay leaf, and any optional vegetables.

  • Return beef to the pot. Simmer covered for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until beef is very tender. Remove lid in the last 30 minutes if gravy needs to thicken.

  • Discard bay leaf and let the filling cool slightly.

2. Assemble the pie:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  • Transfer cooled beef filling to a baking dish or pie tin.

  • Roll pastry over the top, pressing the edges to seal. Trim excess and crimp edges if desired. Cut small slits in the top for steam to escape.

  • Brush with beaten egg.

3. Bake:

  • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until pastry is puffed and golden brown.


🍴 Serving Ideas:

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, peas, and rich gravy or a simple green salad.

  • For individual pies, use ramekins or mini pie dishes.
