Southern Tea Cake Cookies

Here’s a classic and nostalgic treat straight from Southern kitchens: Southern Tea Cake Cookies. These soft, buttery cookies are simple yet full of charm—somewhere between a sugar cookie and a shortbread, often flavored with vanilla or a touch of nutmeg. Perfect with coffee, sweet tea, or milk.


🍪 Southern Tea Cake Cookies

Soft · Buttery · Old-Fashioned

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • Optional: 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (traditional touch)


Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Cream Butter & Sugar:

  • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).

3. Add Eggs & Vanilla:

  • Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla (and nutmeg, if using).

4. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

5. Combine & Chill:

  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until a soft dough forms.

  • Chill the dough for 30–60 minutes for easier handling and better shape.

6. Shape & Bake:

  • Roll dough into 1–1.5 inch balls or drop by rounded tablespoon onto prepared pans.

  • Flatten slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are just starting to turn golden. Centers should still be soft.

7. Cool:

  • Let cookies cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.


📝 Tips & Variations:

  • For a crispier edge: Roll cookies slightly thinner and bake a minute longer.

  • Dust with powdered sugar for an extra sweet touch.

  • Flavor options: Add lemon zest, almond extract, or a cinnamon-sugar sprinkle before baking.
