Ingredients:

For the Sweet Potato Casserole:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes (about 3 lbs), peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted butter (plus extra for greasing the dish)
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk or heavy cream)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (or walnuts)
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup melted butter

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  • In a large pot, boil the sweet potato chunks in water until they are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well.

2. Mash the Sweet Potatoes:

  • Transfer the drained sweet potatoes to a large mixing bowl and mash them until smooth. You can use a potato masher or an electric mixer for a smoother texture.

3. Make the Sweet Potato Filling:

  • Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the mashed sweet potatoes. Stir until well combined and creamy.

4. Prepare the Topping:

  • In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, chopped pecans, oats, flour, and melted butter until everything is well coated and crumbly.

5. Assemble the Casserole:

  • Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes.

6. Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.

7. Serve:

  • Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the sweet, creamy texture with the crunchy topping!

Enjoy!

This Southern Sweet Potato Casserole is a perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and crunchy, making it a showstopper side dish. The buttery streusel topping adds an irresistible crunch that complements the smooth, sweet potatoes beneath it. Whether for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or a family dinner, it’s sure to be a hit!
