Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Posted on January 30, 2025

Here’s a Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak recipe that’s easy to make and so comforting! It’s a perfect dish with tender beef patties in a rich, savory gravy.

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (85% lean is ideal)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat for a healthier option)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (divided)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for browning the steaks)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) beef broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons water (to mix with cornstarch)

Instructions:

1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:

  • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, 1/2 of the chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Form the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, depending on your preferred size.

2. Brown the Patties:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the patties to the skillet and brown them on both sides for about 3-4 minutes per side (they don’t need to be cooked through, just browned). Once browned, transfer the patties to the slow cooker.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, add the remaining chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  • Add the beef broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), ketchup (if using), onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine, and bring to a simmer.
  • Pour the gravy mixture over the patties in the slow cooker.

4. Cook in the Slow Cooker:

  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 2-3 hours, until the patties are cooked through and tender.

5. Optional – Thicken the Gravy:

  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry.
  • After the cooking time is up, transfer the gravy to a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Slowly add the cornstarch slurry and whisk until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the Salisbury steaks with the gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or even noodles. A side of veggies would be perfect for a complete meal!

This slow cooker Salisbury steak is super easy to make and gives you a delicious, comforting meal without much fuss. Enjoy! 😋
