Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is a flavorful and savory dish that combines tender beef, crunchy bell peppers, and sweet onions, all tossed in a savory sauce and served sizzling hot. Here’s a simple recipe to help you recreate this dish at home:

Ingredients:

  • For the Beef Marinade:
    • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp rice wine or dry sherry
    • 1 tsp cornstarch
    • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • For the Sauce:
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional)
    • 1 tbsp sugar
    • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
    • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (cornstarch slurry)
    • 1/4 tsp ground white pepper or freshly cracked black pepper
    • 1 tbsp Chinese black vinegar (optional for extra tang)
  • For the Stir-fry:
    • 1 medium onion, sliced
    • 1 bell pepper (green, red, or both), sliced
    • 1-2 fresh chilies (optional, for extra heat)
    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for stir-frying
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • Garnishes:
    • Green onions, chopped (optional)
    • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Beef:
    • In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, rice wine (or dry sherry), cornstarch, and sesame oil. Toss to coat and let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a separate bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, beef broth (or water), and white pepper. Stir in the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and set aside.
  3. Stir-fry the Vegetables:
    • Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat and add the vegetable oil.
    • Add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
  4. Cook the Beef:
    • In the same wok or skillet, add a bit more oil if needed and toss in the garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
    • Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until it’s cooked through and browned on the edges.
  5. Combine and Finish:
    • Return the cooked vegetables to the wok with the beef. Pour the prepared sauce over everything and stir well to coat. Let it simmer for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and everything is well combined.
  6. Sizzle it (optional for extra flair):
    • For the sizzling effect, you can heat a cast iron plate or sizzling platter in the oven until very hot. Carefully pour the finished stir-fry onto the hot plate and serve immediately with rice on the side.
  7. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds (optional).
    • Serve your sizzling Chinese pepper steak with steamed rice or noodles.
