Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb flank steak (or sirloin), thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for searing)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (green or red), thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low-sodium recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 cup water (or beef broth for extra flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (to thicken sauce)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Beef:

  • Slice the flank steak (or sirloin) thinly against the grain, making sure to cut it into bite-sized strips.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, ground black pepper, and water (or beef broth). Stir in the cornstarch to help thicken the sauce. Set aside.

2. Sear the Beef:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Once the pan is hot, add the sliced beef and cook for 2-3 minutes, searing it until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.

3. Stir-Fry the Vegetables:

  • In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if necessary and sauté the sliced onion and bell pepper over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes until they soften but still retain some crunch.
  • Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the vegetables and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

4. Combine Beef and Sauce:

  • Add the cooked beef back into the skillet with the vegetables. Stir in the prepared sauce mixture and bring everything to a simmer.
  • Let it cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the beef and vegetables.

5. Serve:

  • Serve the sizzling pepper steak immediately, either on a heated plate or sizzling platter for that classic presentation, with steamed rice or noodles.
  • Garnish with additional black pepper or fresh herbs if desired.
