Samosa and spring rolls sheet

Posted on February 24, 2025
If you’re looking for a Samosa and Spring Roll Sheet recipe, I’ve got the perfect solution for you! Using spring roll wrappers (also called samosa wrappers in some places) for both samosas and spring rolls is a fantastic idea, as they’re super versatile and easy to work with. You can use them to make crispy, golden treats filled with either savory spiced potatoes (for samosas) or a variety of vegetables and meat (for spring rolls).

Here’s a basic guide to making Samosa and Spring Roll Sheets that you can fill with your favorite ingredients.

Homemade Samosa and Spring Roll Wrapper Recipe

If you want to make your own wrappers, here’s a simple dough recipe. However, keep in mind that you can also buy pre-made wrappers from most grocery stores or Asian markets, which makes life much easier.

Ingredients for Homemade Samosa & Spring Roll Wrappers:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water (add a little more if needed)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (optional, for color and flavor)

Instructions to Make the Wrapper Dough:

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and turmeric (if using).
  2. Add Oil: Add the vegetable oil and rub it into the flour mixture with your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Form the Dough: Slowly add the warm water, a little at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 20-30 minutes to soften.

Rolling and Cutting the Wrappers:

  1. Divide the Dough: After resting, divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
  2. Roll the Dough: Roll each ball into a thin, round sheet using a rolling pin. Make sure the dough is as thin as possible without tearing it. You can dust it with a little flour to prevent sticking.
  3. Cut the Wrappers: Once rolled out, cut each sheet into smaller rectangles or triangles, depending on the shape you need for your filling.

To Make Samosas:

  • Filling: The traditional samosa filling is a spiced potato mixture, but you can use minced meat, peas, or lentils. Here’s a simple potato filling:

    Ingredients for Potato Samosa Filling:

    • 3 large potatoes (boiled and mashed)
    • 1 tbsp oil
    • 1 onion (finely chopped)
    • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
    • 1 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1 tsp ground coriander
    • 1/2 tsp garam masala
    • 1/2 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
    • 1/4 cup peas (optional)
    • Salt to taste
    • Fresh cilantro, chopped

    Instructions:

    • Heat oil in a pan and sauté cumin seeds, onions, and garlic until fragrant and soft.
    • Add the spices (ground coriander, garam masala, chili powder) and cook for another minute.
    • Stir in the mashed potatoes and peas, season with salt, and cook for another 5 minutes. Add chopped cilantro at the end and remove from heat.
  • Assembling the Samosas:

    • Take a wrapper and fold it into a cone shape.
    • Stuff with a tablespoon of the filling and seal the edges with a little water.
    • Deep fry until golden and crispy.

To Make Spring Rolls:

  • Filling: For spring rolls, you can use a variety of ingredients. A simple vegetable filling is always a hit:

    Ingredients for Spring Roll Filling:

    • 1 cup cabbage (shredded)
    • 1 medium carrot (shredded)
    • 1/2 cup mushrooms (finely chopped)
    • 1/4 cup green onions (chopped)
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

    • Heat a little oil in a pan and sauté the mushrooms, cabbage, and carrots for a few minutes until soft but not soggy.
    • Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let the mixture cool before using.
  • Assembling the Spring Rolls:

    • Place a wrapper on a flat surface.
    • Spoon some of the filling into the center of the wrapper, leaving space at the edges.
    • Fold in the sides and roll up the wrapper tightly, sealing the edges with a little water.
    • Fry the spring rolls in hot oil until crispy and golden.

Tips for Wrapping & Frying:

  • When working with spring roll wrappers or samosa wrappers, make sure to keep them covered with a damp towel as you work, so they don’t dry out.
  • If you’re making these ahead of time, you can freeze the wrapped samosas or spring rolls before frying. Just make sure they’re in a single layer, not touching, on a baking sheet, and freeze until firm. After that, transfer them to a zip-top bag or airtight container.
  • When frying, ensure the oil is at the right temperature (around 350°F/175°C) for the crispiest results. Fry in batches if needed.

This Samosa and Spring Roll Sheet recipe gives you a homemade base to make either crispy, golden samosas or spring rolls that are bursting with flavor! You can get creative with the fillings, whether you prefer a vegetarian version or add meats, seafood, or even tofu for a twist.

Would you like to try a specific filling or add a dipping sauce like chutney or soy sauce to go with it?
