Here’s a hearty, classic comfort food recipe for Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Mushroom Gravy — rich, savory, and perfect for a cozy dinner.

🥩 Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80–85% lean)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1–2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and chopped

  • ½ cup milk (warm)

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • Salt, to taste

  • Optional: 2 tbsp sour cream or cream cheese for extra creaminess

🔪 Instructions:

1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:

  1. In a bowl, mix together beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  2. Shape into 4–5 oval patties.

  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Sear patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned (they don’t have to be fully cooked through yet).

  4. Transfer to a plate.

2. Prepare the Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add butter and oil. Sauté mushrooms and onions until golden (6–8 minutes).

  2. Add garlic, cook for 30 seconds.

  3. Sprinkle in flour, cook 1 minute while stirring.

  4. Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.

  5. Add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  6. Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until steaks are fully cooked and gravy thickens.

3. Make Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).

  2. Drain and mash with warm milk, butter, and optional sour cream or cream cheese.

  3. Season with salt to taste.

🍽️ To Serve:

Plate mashed potatoes, top with Salisbury steak, and generously ladle over the mushroom gravy. Serve with green beans, peas, or a side salad for a full meal.
