1–2 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the Mushroom Gravy:
-
1 tbsp butter
-
1 tbsp oil
-
8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
-
1 small onion, thinly sliced
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 tbsp flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Mashed Potatoes:
-
2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and chopped
-
½ cup milk (warm)
-
4 tbsp butter
-
Salt, to taste
-
Optional: 2 tbsp sour cream or cream cheese for extra creaminess
🔪 Instructions:
1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:
-
In a bowl, mix together beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Shape into 4–5 oval patties.
-
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Sear patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned (they don’t have to be fully cooked through yet).
-
Transfer to a plate.
2. Prepare the Gravy:
-
In the same skillet, add butter and oil. Sauté mushrooms and onions until golden (6–8 minutes).
-
Add garlic, cook for 30 seconds.
-
Sprinkle in flour, cook 1 minute while stirring.
-
Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
-
Add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
-
Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until steaks are fully cooked and gravy thickens.
3. Make Mashed Potatoes:
-
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).
-
Drain and mash with warm milk, butter, and optional sour cream or cream cheese.
-
Season with salt to taste.
🍽️ To Serve:
Plate mashed potatoes, top with Salisbury steak, and generously ladle over the mushroom gravy. Serve with green beans, peas, or a side salad for a full meal.
