🥩 Salisbury Steak with Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Mushroom-Onion Gravy

🍽️ Servings: 4

⏱️ Total Time: ~1 hour

🧂 Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)

  • 1 egg

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • Salt & black pepper to taste

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • 3–4 cloves garlic, peeled

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 1/2 cup milk (or more for creamier texture)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil + 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Optional: fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

🔪 Instructions

1. Make the Garlic Mashed Potatoes (start first):

  • Place potatoes and garlic cloves in a large pot, cover with water, and add salt.

  • Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.

  • Drain, then mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.

2. Form the Salisbury Steaks:

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt & pepper.

  • Mix gently and form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

3. Cook the Steaks:

  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, add a drizzle of oil.

  • Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be cooked through yet).

4. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté 4–5 minutes.

  • Add mushrooms and cook until browned and softened, 6–8 minutes total.

  • Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat.

  • Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.

  • Simmer until thickened (5–8 minutes), then return the patties to the pan.

  • Cover and cook on low heat for another 10–15 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked.

5. Assemble and Serve:

  • Spoon a mound of garlic mashed potatoes on each plate.

  • Top with a Salisbury steak.

  • Smother with mushroom & onion gravy.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley or thyme if desired.

✅ Tips:

  • Add a splash of heavy cream to the mashed potatoes for extra richness.

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties reach 160°F internally.

  • Want extra gravy? Increase broth and flour slightly.
