Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steak:
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
-
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
-
1/4 cup milk
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
1 garlic clove, minced
-
1 large egg
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
-
2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Mushroom Gravy:
-
1 cup mushrooms (button or cremini), sliced
-
1 small onion, sliced
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp flour
-
1 cup beef broth (or more for desired consistency)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for added depth of flavor)
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
-
2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet, peeled and cubed)
-
4 cloves garlic, peeled
-
1/2 cup milk (more for creaminess if desired)
-
1/4 cup butter
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
-
Boil the potatoes: In a large pot, add the cubed potatoes and garlic cloves. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
-
Drain and mash: Drain the water and return the potatoes and garlic to the pot. Mash them with a potato masher until smooth.
-
Add butter and milk: Stir in the butter and milk. Mash until the potatoes are creamy and smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Set aside: Keep warm while you prepare the rest of the dish.
2. Make the Salisbury Steak Patties:
-
Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
-
Form the patties: Shape the mixture into 4-6 patties, depending on your desired size.
-
Cook the patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through (internal temperature should be 160°F/70°C). Remove from the skillet and set aside.
3. Make the Mushroom Gravy:
-
Sauté the mushrooms and onions: In the same skillet, add butter. Once melted, sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions over medium heat until they soften and become golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
-
Make the gravy: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
-
Add the broth and seasonings: Gradually add the beef broth while stirring, followed by Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly.
-
Add the steaks back: Return the cooked Salisbury steak patties to the skillet. Spoon the gravy over them and let everything simmer together for an additional 5 minutes to combine the flavors.
4. Serve:
-
Plate the mashed potatoes first, then top with the Salisbury steaks. Spoon the rich mushroom gravy over the top.
-
Garnish with extra chopped parsley or chives if you like.
Tips:
-
For extra flavor, you can sauté the onions for the steaks in the skillet first before adding them to the patty mixture.
-
Adjust the consistency of the gravy: If the gravy is too thick, add a little more broth or water to reach your preferred consistency.
Enjoy your hearty Salisbury Steak with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Mushrooms! It’s sure to be a comforting meal everyone will love. Let me know how it turns out if you try it!
