Popcorn Shrimp

Here’s a crispy, golden, and irresistibly snackable Popcorn Shrimp recipe — bite-sized shrimp that are breaded and fried to perfection. Great as an appetizer, party food, or even tucked into tacos or wraps.


🍤 Popcorn Shrimp (Crispy Fried)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb small shrimp (51/60 count or smaller), peeled and deveined

  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar as substitute)

  • 1 tsp hot sauce (optional, for extra flavor)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal or breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • Vegetable oil, for frying


Instructions:

1. Prep the Shrimp:

  • Rinse and pat the shrimp dry with paper towels.

  • Toss them in a bowl with buttermilk and hot sauce. Let sit for 10–15 minutes to soak.

2. Prepare Breading:

  • In another bowl, mix flour, cornmeal (or breadcrumbs), garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper.

3. Bread the Shrimp:

  • Remove shrimp from buttermilk, letting excess drip off.

  • Toss in the flour mixture until well coated. Press gently so the coating sticks.

  • Place on a tray in a single layer.

4. Fry:

  • Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry shrimp in batches (don’t overcrowd) for about 2–3 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

5. Serve:

  • Serve hot with lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce: tartar, cocktail sauce, remoulade, or spicy mayo.


✅ Tips & Variations:

  • Oven-baked option: Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway. Spray with oil for extra crisp.

  • Air fryer: Spray shrimp lightly with oil and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 6–8 minutes.

  • Panko: Use panko for ultra-crunchy texture.
