-
1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or ground sirloin)
-
1 tbsp olive oil
-
1 small onion, finely diced
-
1 green bell pepper, diced
-
1 clove garlic, minced
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tbsp ketchup (optional, for slight sweetness)
-
1 tsp beef bouillon or ½ cube (optional for richness)
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
½ cup water or beef broth
-
1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water (for thickening, optional)
-
6 slices provolone cheese or 1 cup shredded provolone/mozzarella
-
4–6 brioche or sandwich buns, toasted
🔥 Instructions:
-
Sauté veggies:
-
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
-
Add onions and bell peppers; cook until soft (about 5 minutes). Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
-
-
Cook beef:
-
Add ground beef to the pan. Brown it, breaking up with a spoon, until fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
-
-
Season and simmer:
-
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup (if using), beef bouillon, salt, and pepper.
-
Add ½ cup water or broth. Simmer for 5 minutes.
-
-
Thicken the mixture (optional):
-
Stir in a slurry made from cornstarch and cold water if you want a thicker, saucier mix. Simmer another 2 minutes.
-
-
Add cheese:
-
Lower heat and stir in provolone until melted and creamy. (Or layer slices over the top, cover with lid for 1–2 mins to melt.)
-
-
Assemble:
-
Spoon the hot filling onto toasted buns. Serve immediately!
-
✅ Optional Add-Ons:
-
Top with sautéed mushrooms for a deluxe version.
-
Swap provolone for Cheez Whiz for that classic Philly-style edge.
-
