PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

Posted on June 2, 2025
Here’s a fun, hearty twist on two American comfort food favorites: Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes. It’s everything you love about a cheesesteak — savory beef, melty cheese, onions and peppers — but with the saucy, messy joy of a sloppy joe. Great for weeknights, game day, or feeding a crowd!

🥪 Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

🍽️ Serves: 4–6 | ⏱️ Ready in 25–30 minutes

🧾 Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or ground sirloin)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp ketchup (optional, for slight sweetness)

  • 1 tsp beef bouillon or ½ cube (optional for richness)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • ½ cup water or beef broth

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water (for thickening, optional)

  • 6 slices provolone cheese or 1 cup shredded provolone/mozzarella

  • 4–6 brioche or sandwich buns, toasted

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Sauté veggies:

    • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

    • Add onions and bell peppers; cook until soft (about 5 minutes). Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.

  2. Cook beef:

    • Add ground beef to the pan. Brown it, breaking up with a spoon, until fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.

  3. Season and simmer:

    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup (if using), beef bouillon, salt, and pepper.

    • Add ½ cup water or broth. Simmer for 5 minutes.

  4. Thicken the mixture (optional):

    • Stir in a slurry made from cornstarch and cold water if you want a thicker, saucier mix. Simmer another 2 minutes.

  5. Add cheese:

    • Lower heat and stir in provolone until melted and creamy. (Or layer slices over the top, cover with lid for 1–2 mins to melt.)

  6. Assemble:

    • Spoon the hot filling onto toasted buns. Serve immediately!

✅ Optional Add-Ons:

  • Top with sautéed mushrooms for a deluxe version.

  • Swap provolone for Cheez Whiz for that classic Philly-style edge.

  • Toast buns with garlic butter for extra flavor.
