🍔 Classic Patty Melt Recipe
Ingredients (Serves 2):
-
½ lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal for juiciness)
-
Salt & pepper, to taste
-
4 slices rye bread (or sourdough/white if preferred)
-
4 slices cheese (Swiss, American, or cheddar – or mix!)
-
1 large onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1 tbsp oil (for onions)
-
Optional: Thousand Island or spicy mayo for spreading
🔪 Instructions:
🔹 Step 1: Caramelize the onions
-
Heat 1 tbsp oil and 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
-
Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until golden and soft. Set aside.
🔹 Step 2: Make the patties
-
Form ground beef into 2 thin, wide patties, about the size of your bread slices.
-
Season both sides with salt and pepper.
-
In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, until cooked through and browned. Set aside.
🔹 Step 3: Assemble the melts
-
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
-
On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer:
-
1 slice cheese
-
A beef patty
-
Caramelized onions
-
Another slice of cheese
-
Top with the other slice of bread (buttered side out).
-
🔹 Step 4: Grill the sandwiches
-
Wipe out the skillet and heat over medium.
-
Grill each sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing slightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
🧀 Tips & Variations:
-
Add a smear of Thousand Island, Dijon, or hot mustard inside for extra flavor.
-
Use gruyère, muenster, or pepper jack for a gourmet spin.
-
Want to level it up? Add a few grilled mushrooms or pickled jalapeños.
