Old Goulash Recipe

Posted on July 11, 2025

Here’s a hearty, nostalgic Old-Fashioned American Goulash recipe — the kind your grandma might’ve made. It’s warm, beefy, and loaded with tender elbow macaroni in a rich tomato sauce. Simple, satisfying, and perfect for feeding a crowd or freezing for later!

🍲 Old-Fashioned Goulash (American-Style)

📝 Ingredients (Serves 6–8)

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works well)

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

  • 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes (with juices)

  • 1–2 tbsp tomato paste (for richness, optional)

  • 1½ cups elbow macaroni, uncooked

  • 2 cups beef broth (or water)

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 bay leaf

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1 tsp soy sauce or Worcestershire (adds umami)

  • Optional garnish: shredded cheddar or parsley

🔧 Instructions

1. Brown the Beef

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned.

  • Drain excess grease, then add diced onion and cook until softened (about 3–4 mins).

  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds more.

2. Build the Sauce

  • Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste (if using), broth, and seasonings (Italian seasoning, paprika, bay leaf, salt & pepper).

  • Stir in soy sauce or Worcestershire if using.

  • Bring to a low boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.

3. Cook the Pasta

  • Stir in uncooked elbow macaroni.

  • Cover and simmer over low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and the sauce has thickened.

  • If it gets too thick, add a splash of water or broth.

4. Finish and Serve

  • Remove bay leaf.

  • Taste and adjust seasoning.

  • Serve hot, optionally topped with shredded cheddar or a sprinkle of fresh parsley.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Serve with garlic bread and a green salad.

  • Add a side of green beans or corn for a classic old-school dinner plate.

🧡 Tips & Variations

  • Add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms for more veggies.

  • Want it cheesy? Stir in 1 cup shredded cheese before serving.

  • Freezer-friendly! Just cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
