🔪 Instructions
1. Make the Patties:
In a bowl, mix:
-
Ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic & onion powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
2. Sear the Patties:
-
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a bit of oil.
-
Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
-
Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Gravy:
-
In the same pan, melt butter.
-
Add sliced onions and sauté until soft and golden (6–8 minutes).
-
Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.
-
Add ketchup, Worcestershire, and optional mustard or soy.
-
Simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
4. Simmer the Steak:
-
Return patties to the skillet.
-
Spoon gravy over the top and reduce heat to low.
-
Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until steaks are fully cooked and gravy thickens.
5. Serve:
-
Spoon over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
-
Add peas or green beans for a true retro meal.
💡 Tips:
-
Want a richer gravy? Add a splash of heavy cream or a pat of butter at the end.
-
Double the gravy if you’re serving with lots of mashed potatoes!
