Mix Cloves with Vaseline

Posted on April 5, 2025
Mixing cloves with Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is a popular home remedy that some people use for a variety of purposes. The combination is often touted for its potential benefits, like soothing skin, helping with dry lips, or acting as a natural remedy for certain types of skin irritations or conditions. However, it’s important to note that while cloves have a strong, warm, and slightly numbing effect, they can also cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Always do a patch test before using any new mixture on your skin.

Here’s how you can safely make a Clove and Vaseline mixture:

Cloves and Vaseline Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Vaseline (petroleum jelly) – about 2 tablespoons (or more depending on how much you want to make)

  • Whole cloves – about 5-6 cloves (or ground cloves, about 1 teaspoon)

Instructions:

  1. Grind the Cloves (if using whole cloves):

    • You can grind the whole cloves in a mortar and pestle or spice grinder until they become a fine powder. This is recommended if you want the clove mixture to be smooth and easy to apply.

  2. Mix Cloves with Vaseline:

    • In a small bowl, combine the Vaseline and the ground cloves.

    • Stir thoroughly to ensure that the cloves are evenly distributed throughout the Vaseline.

  3. Apply the Mixture:

    • You can apply the mixture to dry lips, cuticles, or rough patches of skin. Some people also use it on minor cuts or acne spots due to the antibacterial properties of cloves.

    • Massage gently into the skin.

  4. Let It Absorb:

    • Allow the mixture to sit on the skin for a few minutes to let the Vaseline absorb and the clove scent to soothe the skin. It’s okay to leave it overnight for intensive care.

Potential Benefits of Cloves with Vaseline:

  • Moisturizing: The petroleum jelly helps lock in moisture, making this mixture great for dry lips, chapped skin, or rough patches.

  • Antibacterial: Cloves have natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which may help with acne or minor skin irritations.

  • Soothe Skin: The warm and slightly numbing effect of cloves may help calm skin inflammation or pain.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Test First: If you’re trying this for the first time, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the cloves or Vaseline.

  • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Avoid applying this mixture to sensitive skin areas like the eyes, as cloves can cause irritation.

  • Fragrance: Cloves have a strong, spicy scent that may be overwhelming for some, so use sparingly if you’re sensitive to strong smells.

This mixture can be a great way to keep your skin moisturized while benefiting from the antibacterial properties of cloves. Just make sure you’re not allergic or sensitive to either ingredient before using it extensively.

Have you used any homemade skincare remedies like this before, or is this your first time trying something new like cloves and Vaseline?
