Here’s a classic, comforting Mama’s Meatloaf Recipe—juicy, flavorful, and topped with a sweet-savory glaze just like grandma used to make. Perfect for a hearty family dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans.


🍽️ Mama’s Old-Fashioned Meatloaf

📝 Ingredients:

For the meatloaf:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 is ideal)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 cup plain breadcrumbs or crushed saltine crackers

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp ketchup or mustard (optional, for added flavor)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme or Italian seasoning (optional)

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard or apple cider vinegar (for tang)


👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Set to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Mix Meatloaf:

    • In a large bowl, combine all meatloaf ingredients. Mix gently with hands or a spoon until just combined—don’t overmix.

  3. Shape:

    • Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish or sheet pan.

    • Shape into a loaf (about 8×4 inches). Don’t pack it too tightly—looser is juicier!

  4. Make the Glaze:

    • In a small bowl, mix ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard or vinegar.

  5. Top and Bake:

    • Spread half of the glaze on top of the loaf.

    • Bake for 50–60 minutes, then top with remaining glaze and bake another 10–15 minutes.

    • Internal temp should be 160°F (71°C).

  6. Rest and Serve:

    • Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This helps keep it juicy.


🔥 Tips:

  • For a lighter texture, soak breadcrumbs in milk before adding to the meat.

  • Swap in half ground pork or ground turkey for variety.

  • Leftovers make amazing meatloaf sandwiches!
