Kentucky Butter Cake

Posted on May 28, 2025
Here’s a rich, buttery, and indulgent Kentucky Butter Cake recipe — a Southern classic known for its tender crumb and buttery vanilla glaze that soaks right into the cake.

🧈 Kentucky Butter Cake

Ingredients

For the Cake:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Butter Sauce:
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter

  • 3 tbsp water

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

🥣 Instructions

1. Preheat & Prepare Pan:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).

  • Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan thoroughly (or use baking spray with flour).

2. Make the Cake Batter:

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).

  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.

  • Mix in vanilla.

  • Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour. Do not overmix.

3. Bake:

  • Pour batter into prepared Bundt pan.

  • Bake for 60–70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

4. Make the Butter Sauce (While Cake Bakes):

  • In a saucepan, combine sugar, butter, and water. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted and sugar is mostly dissolved (do not boil).

  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

5. Soak & Cool:

  • While the cake is still warm and in the pan, poke holes all over with a skewer or thin knife.

  • Slowly pour the warm butter sauce over the cake, allowing it to soak in.

  • Let the cake cool completely in the pan before inverting onto a plate.

🍰 Serving Tips:

  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

  • Even better the next day after the glaze fully soaks in.

  • Serve with fresh berries or whipped cream.

Would you like a version with a citrus twist or a chocolate glaze instead?
