An Italian sandwich is a delicious, hearty, and flavorful creation packed with a variety of meats, cheeses, and fresh vegetables, all seasoned with classic Italian herbs and dressing. Here’s a simple recipe to make a delicious Italian Sandwich!

Ingredients:

For the Sandwich:

  • 1 large Italian sub roll or baguette (you can also use hoagie rolls or ciabatta)
  • 3 oz sliced salami
  • 3 oz sliced pepperoni
  • 3 oz sliced ham (or prosciutto for an extra Italian touch)
  • 3 oz sliced turkey or roast beef (optional)
  • 3 oz provolone cheese (or mozzarella cheese)
  • 1/4 cup sliced red onion
  • 1/4 cup sliced banana peppers (optional for a tangy kick)
  • Tomato slices
  • Lettuce leaves (romaine or iceberg)
  • Olives, sliced (optional)

For the Italian Dressing:

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Italian Dressing:

  • In a small bowl or jar, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, basil, garlic powder, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Set the dressing aside to let the flavors meld.

2. Assemble the Sandwich:

  • Slice your sub roll or baguette in half lengthwise.
  • Drizzle the bottom half of the roll with the prepared Italian dressing. You can brush it on with a pastry brush or pour it on and spread it out evenly.

3. Layer the Ingredients:

  • Start layering with the sliced meats: salami, pepperoni, ham, and any other meat you choose.
  • Add slices of provolone cheese (or mozzarella), followed by slices of tomato, red onion, and banana peppers.
  • Top with a few leaves of lettuce and a sprinkle of olives (if using).

4. Drizzle More Dressing:

  • Drizzle some more Italian dressing over the top of the vegetables and cheese for extra flavor.

5. Close and Serve:

  • Place the top half of the roll on the sandwich and press down gently to compact the ingredients.
  • Slice the sandwich into smaller portions, depending on your preference, and serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Make it Vegetarian: Skip the meats and double up on the cheese, veggies, and olives for a delicious vegetarian version.
  • Extra Flavor: Add a few slices of roasted red peppers or a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for added Italian flavor.
  • Toast the Roll: For a crispy texture, you can toast the roll lightly before assembling the sandwich.
