Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipe

Here’s an easy, delicious recipe for making Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk using pantry staples. It’s creamy, rich, and perfect for desserts like key lime pie, fudge, tres leches, or even your morning coffee.


🥛 Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk

🍽️ Yields: ~1 cup (equivalent to one 14 oz can)

⏱️ Total Time: ~15–20 minutes


🧂 Ingredients:

Stovetop Version:

  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk

  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Dairy-Free Version:

  • 1 cup full-fat canned coconut milk or almond milk

  • ⅔ cup sugar or maple syrup

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or vegan butter (optional)

  • ½ tsp vanilla (optional)


🔥 Instructions (Stovetop Method):

  1. Combine milk and sugar in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Stir continuously until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a gentle simmer.

  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently (no boiling) for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the volume is reduced by about a third and it thickens slightly.

  4. Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla (if using), and let cool.

  5. As it cools, it will thicken further. Store in a clean jar in the fridge for up to 1 week.

⚠️ Don’t rush it with high heat—it can curdle or caramelize too fast.


⚡ Quick Blender Version (No Cook):

  • Blend 1 cup dry milk powder, ⅔ cup sugar, ⅓ cup boiling water, and 3 tbsp melted butter.

  • Blend until smooth and creamy. Cool before using.

  • Ice cream bases

  • Baking recipes calling for canned condensed milk
