Homemade Flour Tortillas

Here’s a simple and soft Homemade Flour Tortilla recipe โ€” perfect for tacos, burritos, or wraps. These tortillas are miles better than store-bought and surprisingly easy to make!


๐ŸŒฎ Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients (makes 8โ€“10 medium tortillas):

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, lard, or softened butter

  • 3/4 cup warm water (you may need a little more or less)

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder.

  2. Add Fat:
    Add the oil (or lard/butter) and mix it in using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture is crumbly.

  3. Add Water and Knead:
    Gradually add warm water and stir to combine. Knead the dough by hand or with a mixer for about 2โ€“3 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour or water if needed to get a soft (not sticky) dough.

  4. Rest the Dough:
    Cover the dough and let it rest for 20โ€“30 minutes. This relaxes the gluten and makes rolling easier.

  5. Divide and Roll:
    Divide the dough into 8โ€“10 equal balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle, about 6โ€“8 inches in diameter.

  6. Cook the Tortillas:
    Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 30โ€“60 seconds per side, or until puffed and lightly golden spots appear. Donโ€™t overcook or theyโ€™ll get stiff.

  7. Keep Warm:
    Wrap cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm and soft while you cook the rest.

  • Room Temp: Store in a sealed container for 2โ€“3 days.

  • Freezer: Freeze with parchment between each tortilla, then reheat in a pan or microwave.
