Posted on April 29, 2025

Here’s a comforting and classic Southern-style recipe for Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy β€” hearty, flavorful, and perfect with mashed potatoes or rice.

🍽️ Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 is ideal)

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)

For the onion gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1 tsp fresh thyme or 1/2 tsp dried

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ Instructions:

  1. Make the hamburger steaks:

    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

    • Shape into 4 oval patties.

  2. Cook the patties:

    • Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

    • Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the onion gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden.

    • Sprinkle flour over the onions, stir, and cook for 1–2 minutes.

    • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until smooth.

    • Season with salt, pepper, and thyme if using.

  4. Simmer together:

    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

    • Cover and simmer on low heat for 15–20 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the gravy thickens.

  5. Serve:

    • Spoon onion gravy generously over the steaks.

    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

🍴 Tip:

For extra richness, add a splash of cream or a dollop of Dijon mustard to the gravy at the end.
