Posted on September 24, 2025

Here’s a classic comfort food favorite: Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy — juicy, seasoned ground beef patties smothered in rich, savory onion gravy. It’s hearty, affordable, and totally satisfying. Serve it over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

🥩 Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🍽️ Serves: 4

⏱️ Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 30–35 min

📝 Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 preferred)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1/4 tsp thyme or a splash of cream for richness

🔥 Instructions:

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Mix just until combined — don’t overwork the meat.

  • Shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Sear the Patties:

  • Heat a skillet (cast iron works great) over medium-high heat.

  • Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until browned.
(They don’t have to be fully cooked yet.)

  • Remove and set aside.

3. Make the Onion Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions.

  • Cook on medium heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.

  • Sprinkle in flour and stir to coat the onions.

  • Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and optional thyme.

  • Simmer for 2–3 minutes until thickened.

4. Simmer Together:

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.

  • Spoon gravy over them and cover.

  • Simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, or until steaks are fully cooked (internal temp of 160°F/71°C).

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Mashed potatoes (classic!)

  • White rice or egg noodles

  • Buttered corn, green beans, or steamed broccoli

  • Crusty bread to mop up that gravy

🥡 Leftovers?

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days

  • Reheat in a skillet or microwave; add a splash of broth if the gravy thickens too much
