Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

Posted on August 25, 2025

Here’s a hearty, comforting dish: Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes — classic, simple, and super satisfying. Think of it as a quicker, easier take on Salisbury steak or shepherd’s pie.

🍽️ Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

🥩 For the Beef & Gravy:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 or leaner)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 1½ cups beef broth (or more for desired consistency)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp thyme or Italian seasoning (optional)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.

  2. Add chopped onion and garlic; sauté for 3–5 minutes until softened.

  3. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well to coat the beef. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.

  4. Gradually add beef broth while stirring, then add Worcestershire sauce and seasonings.

  5. Simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens. Adjust seasoning as needed.

🥔 For the Mashed Potatoes:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and chopped

  • ½ cup milk (warm)

  • 2–4 tbsp butter

  • Salt to taste

  • Optional: cream, sour cream, or garlic for extra richness

Instructions:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15–20 minutes).

  2. Drain and mash using a potato masher or hand mixer.

  3. Stir in butter and warm milk until smooth and creamy.

  4. Season to taste.

🥄 To Serve:

  • Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates or into bowls.

  • Top generously with the beef and gravy.

  • Optional garnish: chopped parsley or green onions.

🔄 Variations:

  • Add peas, carrots, or mushrooms to the gravy for extra texture and nutrition.

  • Sub ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

  • Make it spicy with a pinch of cayenne or chili flakes.
