Green Chile Picadillo

Here’s a flavorful twist on a classic with Green Chile Picadillo — a savory ground beef dish simmered with potatoes, onions, spices, and roasted green chiles. It’s bold, comforting, and perfect for stuffing into tacos, burritos, or serving with rice.


🌶️ Green Chile Picadillo (New Mexico or Southwest-Inspired)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced small

  • 1 cup roasted chopped green chile (Hatch or Anaheim; hot or mild to taste)

  • ½ tsp ground cumin

  • ½ tsp Mexican oregano (or regular oregano)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • ½ cup beef broth or water (as needed)

  • Optional: 1 Roma tomato, diced (for added depth)

  • Optional: chopped cilantro, for garnish


🧑‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Brown the meat:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned.

  • Add onion and garlic and sauté until translucent (about 3–4 minutes).

  • Drain excess grease if needed.

2. Add potatoes:

  • Stir in the diced potatoes. Cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, so they start to soften and absorb the flavor.

3. Season and simmer:

  • Add green chile, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and diced tomato if using.

  • Stir everything well to combine.

  • Add ½ cup broth or water to help cook the potatoes and simmer the mixture.

  • Cover and simmer on low for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender and flavors meld. Add more broth as needed for moisture.

4. Taste and serve:

  • Adjust seasoning. Garnish with cilantro if desired.

  • Serve hot with tortillas, rice, or stuffed in burritos or gorditas.


🔄 Variations:

  • Add a splash of lime juice or a pinch of cinnamon for a Cuban-style nod.

  • Use sweet potatoes instead of white for a twist.

  • Want it saucier? Stir in ¼ cup tomato sauce or enchilada sauce while simmering.
