Garlic and Butter Flatbread
Ingredients:
For the Flatbread:
-
2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour for a healthier option)
-
1 tsp salt
-
1 tsp baking powder
-
2 tbsp olive oil (or melted butter)
-
¾ cup warm water (adjust if necessary)
-
1 tbsp yogurt (optional, for extra softness)
For the Garlic Butter:
-
4-5 cloves garlic, minced (you can use more if you love garlic!)
-
4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
-
1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)
-
1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for brushing)
Instructions:
1. Make the Flatbread Dough:
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix well.
-
Add olive oil (or melted butter) and yogurt (if using) to the dry ingredients.
-
Gradually add warm water and mix to form a soft dough. You may need to add a little more water depending on your flour.
-
Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a splash more water.
-
Once kneaded, cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes (this helps it become soft and easy to roll out).
2. Prepare the Garlic Butter:
-
While the dough is resting, prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, melt the butter and then stir in the minced garlic. If you want extra flavor, you can sauté the garlic in a bit of olive oil for a minute or so before mixing it with the butter.
-
Stir in the fresh parsley and set the garlic butter aside.
3. Roll Out the Dough:
-
After the dough has rested, divide it into 4 equal balls (or more if you want smaller flatbreads).
-
Roll each ball into a thin, round shape, about ¼ inch thick. You can use a rolling pin or flatten with your hands.
-
If the dough sticks, sprinkle some flour on the work surface.
4. Cook the Flatbread:
-
Heat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat (no oil needed for cooking).
-
Once the pan is hot, place one flatbread at a time and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown spots appear and the bread puffs up. Flip it using tongs or a spatula.
-
Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
5. Brush with Garlic Butter:
-
Immediately after cooking each flatbread, brush it with the prepared garlic butter while it’s still warm, ensuring the garlic and butter soak into the bread.
-
You can brush each flatbread generously, adding more garlic butter as desired.
6. Serve:
-
Once all the flatbreads are cooked and brushed with garlic butter, serve them warm. Garnish with extra fresh parsley if you like, and enjoy with a dip (like tzatziki or hummus) or as a side with your favorite dish.
Optional Variations:
-
Cheesy Garlic Flatbread: Add some shredded mozzarella or parmesan to the garlic butter before brushing it on the flatbread for a cheesy twist.
-
Spicy Garlic Flatbread: Add a pinch of red chili flakes to the garlic butter for a bit of heat.
-
Herb-Infused: You can experiment with different herbs in the garlic butter like thyme, rosemary, or oregano for added flavor.
Tips:
-
Resting the Dough: Don’t skip resting the dough! This makes it much easier to roll out and results in a fluffier texture.
-
Rolling Tip: If you prefer your flatbread thinner and crispier, roll it out a bit thinner. If you like it soft and chewy, keep it slightly thicker.
-
Make Ahead: You can prepare the flatbread dough in advance and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours, which will enhance the flavor. Just make sure to bring it back to room temperature before rolling it out.
