Fried green tomatoes

Posted on August 6, 2025

Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern classic—tangy, crispy, and super satisfying. Here’s a traditional recipe you can make at home:

🍅 Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Servings: 4
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 10–15 min

🛒 Ingredients:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes (firm and unripe)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs

  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar)

  • ¾ cup cornmeal

  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)

  • ¼ tsp paprika or Cajun seasoning (optional)

  • Vegetable oil for frying (canola or peanut oil works well)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Prep the Tomatoes

    • Slice tomatoes into ¼–½ inch thick rounds.

    • Lightly salt both sides and let them sit on paper towels for 10 minutes to draw out moisture.

  2. Set Up Breading Station

    • Bowl 1: Flour + salt + pepper

    • Bowl 2: Beaten eggs + buttermilk

    • Bowl 3: Cornmeal + breadcrumbs + paprika or seasoning

  3. Bread the Tomatoes

    • Dredge each tomato slice in flour → dip in egg wash → coat in cornmeal mixture.

    • Press gently to help the coating stick.

  4. Fry

    • Heat ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (350°F if using a thermometer).

    • Fry tomatoes in batches, 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown.

    • Drain on paper towels or a wire rack.

  5. Serve Hot

    • Great with a side of ranch, remoulade, or a spicy aioli.

🍽️ Tips:

  • Want extra crunch? Double dip: flour → egg → flour again → egg → cornmeal.

  • You can make them gluten-free with cornmeal and GF flour.

  • Add a sprinkle of grated parmesan to the cornmeal mix for extra flavor.
