Fried cabbage with bacon, onion and garlic

Here’s a hearty and flavorful recipe for Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic — simple comfort food that works as a side dish or a main meal with some crusty bread or potatoes.


🥬🥓 Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion & Garlic

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped

  • 5–6 slices bacon, chopped

  • 1 medium onion, sliced or chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

  • Optional: a pinch of red pepper flakes or smoked paprika for heat

  • (Optional: 1 tbsp butter for richness)


🔪 Instructions:

  1. Cook the bacon:

    • In a large skillet or deep pan, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy.

    • Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside. Leave the bacon fat in the pan.

  2. Sauté onion and garlic:

    • Add sliced onion to the bacon fat and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened and slightly golden.

    • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds (don’t let it burn).

  3. Add the cabbage:

    • Add chopped cabbage to the pan. It will look like a lot at first, but it cooks down.

    • Stir well to coat with the fat and onions. Season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes or paprika.

  4. Cook until tender:

    • Cover and cook on medium-low for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and lightly caramelized. You can uncover for the last few minutes to let excess moisture evaporate and get a bit of browning.

  5. Finish and serve:

    • Stir in the cooked bacon. Optional: add a small knob of butter for extra flavor.

    • Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot!


🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, pork chops, or grilled sausage.

  • Or keep it low-carb and enjoy as-is!
