Envelope Roast

Posted on August 8, 2025

Here’s a classic, flavorful, and super easy Envelope Roast recipe — named after the three seasoning packets (a.k.a. “envelopes”) used to create a savory, tender roast with hardly any prep. Perfect for a no-fuss dinner with big flavor!

🥩 Envelope Roast (3-Packet Roast)

Ingredients:

  • 3–4 lb beef roast (chuck roast is ideal)

  • 1 packet dry ranch dressing mix

  • 1 packet dry Italian dressing mix

  • 1 packet brown gravy mix

  • 1 cup water

  • Optional: potatoes, carrots, onions for roasting

Instructions (Oven or Slow Cooker):

👉 Oven Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Place roast in a large roasting pan or Dutch oven.

  3. Mix seasoning packets with 1 cup of water in a bowl until combined.

  4. Pour mixture over the roast. Add optional vegetables around the meat if desired.

  5. Cover tightly with a lid or foil and roast for 3½ to 4 hours, or until meat is fork-tender.

👉 Slow Cooker Method:

  1. Place roast in the slow cooker.

  2. Mix all three seasoning packets with 1 cup water and pour over roast.

  3. Cover and cook on:

    • Low for 8–9 hours

    • High for 4–5 hours, until fall-apart tender.

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Baby potatoes, carrots, or mushrooms (add at the start for slow cooker; halfway for oven)

  • Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce for more depth

  • For a thicker gravy, stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water) near the end

Serve With:

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Egg noodles or rice

  • Crusty bread to soak up the gravy
