Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas Recipe

Posted on May 25, 2025
Here’s a simple, foolproof recipe for easy homemade flour tortillas — soft, flexible, and way better than store-bought!

🌮 Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients (makes 8–10 medium tortillas):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 3/4 cup warm water

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil (or melted butter/lard)

🧑‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Mix the dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.

  • Add oil and warm water.

  • Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then knead for 2–3 minutes until smooth and soft. (Add a little more water or flour if needed.)

2. Rest:

  • Cover dough with a towel and let rest for 20–30 minutes — this makes it easier to roll out.

3. Divide and shape:

  • Cut dough into 8–10 equal pieces.

  • Roll each into a ball, cover again to keep them moist.

4. Roll out:

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle (about 6–8 inches in diameter).

  • Try to keep them even, but don’t worry about perfect circles!

5. Cook:

  • Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

  • Cook each tortilla for 30–60 seconds per side until bubbles form and you get golden brown spots.

  • Stack cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft.

✅ Tips:

  • Don’t overcook or they’ll turn crispy.

  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly at room temp for 1–2 days, or freeze for later.

  • Great for tacos, wraps, quesadillas, or even as a flatbread with hummus.

Want a whole wheat version, gluten-free, or flavored tortillas (spinach, garlic, etc.)? I’ve got those too!
