Dagwood Sandwich Recipe

Posted on March 28, 2025

A Dagwood Sandwich is a towering, hearty sandwich that’s loaded with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments, making it a true indulgence for sandwich lovers! This sandwich is named after Dagwood Bumstead, a character from the comic strip Blondie, known for his massive and overstuffed sandwiches.

Here’s how to make a classic Dagwood Sandwich:

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of hearty bread (such as whole wheat, sourdough, or rye)

  • 4-6 slices deli meats (ham, turkey, roast beef, salami, or a mix of your favorites)

  • 2 slices cheese (Swiss, cheddar, provolone, or your preferred cheese)

  • 1/2 avocado, sliced (optional)

  • Lettuce (romaine or iceberg)

  • Tomato slices

  • Red onion slices

  • Pickles (sliced dill pickles or pickle chips)

  • Mustard and mayonnaise (or other condiments like ketchup, BBQ sauce, or ranch)

  • Sliced cucumber (optional)

  • Olives (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Bread:

  • Toast the bread slices lightly if you prefer a bit of crunch or leave them soft for a more classic Dagwood texture.

2. Layer the Condiments:

  • Spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread and mustard on the other. You can also use your favorite condiments, such as BBQ sauce, ranch, or hot sauce, depending on your taste preferences.

3. Add the Meat Layers:

  • Start layering the deli meats on the bottom slice of bread. Stack them in alternating directions to keep the sandwich sturdy. You can use a mix of ham, turkey, roast beef, and salami—the more, the better!

4. Add the Cheese:

  • Place a slice of cheese on top of the meats. You can use Swiss, cheddar, or provolone cheese, or even mix different types to enhance the flavor.

5. Add the Vegetables:

  • Layer on the lettuce, tomato slices, and red onion slices. Add sliced avocado for extra creaminess, and cucumber slices if you like a refreshing crunch. Don’t forget to add some pickles for that tangy bite!

6. Stack More Layers (Optional):

  • Add another layer of meats and cheese if you want an even more massive sandwich! Feel free to customize with other ingredients like olives, sautéed mushrooms, or even bacon if you like.

7. Top and Press:

  • Top the sandwich with the second slice of bread, condiment side down. If the sandwich is very tall, you can press it down gently to help keep everything in place.

8. Slice and Serve:

  • To make the sandwich easier to eat, cut it in half or into quarters with a sharp knife. You can secure the sandwich with toothpicks or skewer sticks if needed to hold everything together.

Tips and Variations:

  • Toast the bread for added crunch or serve it soft if you prefer a more traditional Dagwood texture.

  • Add more meats: Don’t be afraid to stack multiple types of deli meats for the ultimate Dagwood experience.

  • Change up the condiments: Feel free to use different sauces like aioli, pesto, or even spicy mustard to personalize your sandwich.

  • Veggies: For more flavor, add roasted peppers, spinach, or cucumbers.

  • Spicy kick: Add jalapeños or hot sauce to bring some heat to your sandwich.

The Dagwood Sandwich is an indulgent and fun creation, perfect for when you want a huge, flavorful sandwich. Feel free to get creative with your ingredients and stack it as high as you can!
