Posted on June 26, 2025

Here’s a rich and comforting recipe for Classic Vanilla Butter Cake topped with a luscious Buttermilk Sauce — a Southern-style dessert that’s moist, flavorful, and perfect for any occasion.

🍰 Classic Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttermilk Sauce

🧈 Vanilla Butter Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan or two 8-inch round pans.

  2. Cream Butter and Sugar:

    • Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3–4 minutes).

  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla:

    • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla.

  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:

    • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Alternate Adding Flour and Buttermilk:

    • Add flour mixture in thirds, alternating with buttermilk, starting and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.

  6. Bake:

    • Pour into prepared pan(s). Bake 30–35 minutes (or until a toothpick comes out clean). Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

🥄 Warm Buttermilk Sauce

This sauce is poured over the cake while warm — it soaks in and adds extra moisture and flavor.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup sugar

  • ⅓ cup buttermilk

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup or honey (optional, for gloss)

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Simmer the Sauce:

    • In a saucepan, combine sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup (if using), and baking soda.

  2. Cook & Stir:

    • Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Stir constantly — mixture will foam (from baking soda). Simmer for 4–5 minutes until thickened slightly.

  3. Add Vanilla:

    • Remove from heat, stir in vanilla.

🍰 To Serve:

  • Poke a few small holes in the warm cake with a skewer or fork.

  • Pour buttermilk sauce evenly over the top.

  • Let it soak in before slicing.

💡 Tips:

  • This cake also works well baked in a bundt pan (adjust bake time to 45–50 mins).

  • Serve with whipped cream or fresh berries for a perfect finish.
