Classic Meat and Potato Casserole

Here’s a hearty and comforting Classic Meat and Potato Casserole — the kind of dish that feels like home. Tender potatoes, seasoned ground beef, and a creamy or cheesy sauce all baked together until bubbly and golden.


🥘🥔 Classic Meat and Potato Casserole

✅ Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)

  • ½ cup milk

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1 tsp dried parsley (optional)

  • 1 tsp paprika (optional, for flavor and color)

  • Butter or cooking spray, for greasing the dish


🥣 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Cook the beef:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onions until browned.

    • Add garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook for 1–2 more minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

  3. Prepare the sauce:

    • In a bowl, mix the soup and milk until smooth. Stir in dried parsley if using.

  4. Assemble the casserole:

    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish.

    • Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes.

    • Pour half of the soup mixture over the beef.

    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes, beef, and soup mixture.

    • Cover tightly with foil.

  5. Bake:

    • Bake covered for 60–70 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.

  6. Add cheese & finish:

    • Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar on top.

    • Return to oven and bake uncovered for 15 more minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.


✅ Optional Add-ins:

  • Frozen peas or corn between layers

  • Swap beef for ground turkey or ground sausage

  • Use cream of celery soup for a different twist


🥄 Serving Tip:

Let rest for 10 minutes before serving for cleaner slices.
