Cinnamon Swirl

Making a Cinnamon Swirl bread or roll is a fantastic treat! The sweet cinnamon filling swirled into soft, buttery bread creates an irresistible combination. Here’s a simple recipe to help you make your own:

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Filling:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Icing (optional):

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • In a small bowl, warm the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop until it reaches around 110°F (43°C). Stir in the sugar and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

2. Make the Cinnamon Filling:

  • While the dough is rising, make the cinnamon filling by mixing the brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter in a small bowl until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

3. Roll Out the Dough:

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a large rectangle, about 12 x 18 inches (30 x 45 cm).
  • Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

4. Roll and Shape:

  • Starting from the long edge of the rectangle, carefully roll the dough up into a tight log.
  • Pinch the edges to seal the roll and place it seam side down on a lightly greased baking dish or a parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Second Rise:

  • Cover the cinnamon roll log with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has puffed up.

6. Bake:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the cinnamon swirl for about 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

7. Glaze (Optional):

  • While the cinnamon swirl is baking, make the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Once the cinnamon swirl has cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over the top for a sweet finishing touch.

8. Serve:

  • Slice the cinnamon swirl into thick pieces and serve warm. It’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a delicious snack with a cup of coffee or tea.
