Cheesy Onion Crisps

Posted on April 5, 2025
Cheesy onion crisps sound absolutely irresistible! They’re the perfect snack, crunchy, cheesy, and packed with flavor. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own Cheesy Onion Crisps at home, ideal for munching on during movie nights, parties, or just when you’re craving something savory.

Cheesy Onion Crisps

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions (yellow or red work best)

  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (or any cheese you prefer, like parmesan or gouda)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder (optional for extra flavor)

  • ½ tsp paprika (optional for a little smokiness)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (for extra crunch, optional)

  • Fresh herbs for garnish (like parsley or chives, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:

    • Peel and thinly slice the onions into rings or half-rings, depending on your preference. You can also cut them into thin strips if you want a different shape.

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Season the Onion Rings:

    • In a large bowl, toss the onion rings with olive oil to lightly coat them.

    • Add garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to the bowl and toss again to ensure the onions are evenly seasoned.

  3. Coat with Cheese and Breadcrumbs:

    • Take a baking sheet and spread the seasoned onion rings in a single layer. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the onions. You can press a little bit of cheese into the onion slices to help it stick.

    • If you like extra crunch, sprinkle a small amount of breadcrumbs over the cheese-coated onions.

  4. Bake the Crisps:

    • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the onions are golden and crispy and the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

    • Keep an eye on them toward the end to avoid burning, as the cheese can brown quickly.

  5. Garnish and Serve:

    • Once done, remove from the oven and let the crisps cool for a minute or two.

    • Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives if desired.

  6. Enjoy!

    • Serve immediately as a snack, appetizer, or side dish with a dip of your choice (ranch or sour cream works great).

Tips:

  • Cheese Varieties: You can experiment with different cheese types for a more complex flavor. Parmesan adds a sharp, nutty taste, while mozzarella would make them extra gooey!

  • Baking Alternatives: If you have an air fryer, you can also air-fry these cheesy onion crisps for an even crispier texture. Just cook them in batches at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes, checking to make sure they don’t burn.

  • Dipping Sauce: Serve these with a tangy ranch dressing, spicy sriracha mayo, or a sweet chili sauce for a little extra zing!

This recipe is all about getting that perfect balance between crispy onions and melted, cheesy goodness. Let me know if you try it out or if you’d like to tweak the recipe in any way!
