Posted on May 2, 2025

Here’s a hearty, cheesy layered meat and mashed potato bake — like a cozy, upgraded shepherd’s pie with a rich, cheesy twist. Perfect for feeding a family or prepping for leftovers!

🥘 Cheesy Layered Meat & Mashed Potato Bake

Ingredients:

For the Meat Layer:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (for richness)

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Mashed Potato Layer:

  • 3–4 cups mashed potatoes (fresh or leftover)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1/4 cup milk or cream

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for mixing into potatoes)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Topping:

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)

  • Optional: chopped green onions or parsley, for garnish

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Cook the Meat Mixture

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with onions until browned.

    • Drain excess fat if needed.

    • Add garlic, tomato sauce, paste, Worcestershire, and seasoning. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until thickened.

  3. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

    • In a bowl, combine mashed potatoes with butter, milk, and optional shredded cheese. Mix until creamy. Season to taste.

  4. Layer the Bake
In a greased 9×9-inch baking dish or casserole:

    • Bottom Layer: Spread the meat mixture evenly.

    • Middle Layer: Spoon mashed potatoes over the meat and smooth the top.

    • Top Layer: Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the potatoes.

  5. Bake
Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.

  6. Broil (Optional)
Broil for the last 2–3 minutes to brown the cheese on top.

  7. Garnish & Serve
Let it cool for 5 minutes. Top with chopped green onions or parsley before serving.

🍴 Serving Ideas:

  • Serve with a side of roasted vegetables or a green salad.

  • Add a layer of sautéed mushrooms or peas for extra texture and flavor.
