Braised Fish Recipe

Posted on April 27, 2025
A Braised Fish recipe is a beautiful way to prepare tender, flavorful fish, slow-cooked in a rich broth with aromatic spices. This method keeps the fish moist and allows it to absorb all the flavors of the sauce. Here’s a simple and delicious braised fish recipe:

Braised Fish Recipe (Serves 4)

Ingredients:

  • 4 fish fillets (white fish like cod, tilapia, or snapper work great)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated or minced

  • 1 large tomato, chopped (or 1/2 cup crushed tomatoes)

  • 1 cup fish stock (or vegetable/chicken stock)

  • 1/2 cup white wine (optional)

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin

  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional, for heat)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Fresh cilantro (for garnish)

  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the fish: Season the fish fillets with a pinch of salt, pepper, and a little paprika. Set aside.

  2. Sauté the aromatics: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or braising pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and ginger, and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. Add the spices: Stir in the paprika, turmeric, cumin, and chili flakes (if using). Let the spices toast for about 30 seconds to release their flavors.

  4. Simmer the sauce: Add the chopped tomato (or crushed tomatoes) to the pan, stirring to combine with the spices. Let it cook for about 5 minutes until the tomato softens and breaks down.

  5. Add liquid: Pour in the fish stock, white wine (if using), and soy sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

  6. Braise the fish: Carefully place the fish fillets into the pan. Spoon some of the sauce over the top of the fish. Cover the pan with a lid and let the fish braise gently for about 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

  7. Finish and garnish: Remove the pan from the heat and garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve the braised fish hot with a side of steamed rice, couscous, or crusty bread to soak up the flavorful sauce. Add lemon wedges for a zesty touch.

Tips:

  • Fish choice: Firm, white fish like cod, haddock, or snapper work best for braising, but you can also use salmon or other oily fish.

  • Flavor variations: For a more Mediterranean flavor, you can add olives, capers, and a little lemon zest. For an Asian twist, consider adding a splash of fish sauce and garnish with green onions.

This dish is comforting, flavorful, and easy to make. The braised fish and its rich sauce are a great way to impress your guests or enjoy a cozy meal at home. Enjoy!
