A Biscuits and Gravy with Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole is a delicious and hearty dish that combines all the classic elements of a savory breakfast into one casserole. Here’s a recipe to help you make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb sausage (breakfast sausage, preferably spicy or mild depending on preference)
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (8 count, or homemade biscuits if preferred)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for extra richness)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for gravy)
  • 2 cups milk (for gravy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for spice)
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Biscuits:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Cut the biscuits into quarters and set aside.

2. Cook the Sausage:

  • In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
  • If there’s excess grease in the skillet, you can drain it, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons to make the gravy.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, add the flour and stir to make a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.
  • Slowly add 2 cups of milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  • Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes for heat. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Once thickened, remove the gravy from heat and set aside.

4. Prepare the Casserole:

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Spread the biscuit quarters evenly at the bottom of the dish.
  • Layer the cooked sausage evenly over the biscuits.
  • Pour the eggs over the sausage and biscuits, spreading them evenly with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper.
  • If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.

5. Bake:

  • Pour the prepared gravy over the casserole, making sure it’s evenly distributed.
  • Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the eggs are set, the biscuits are cooked through, and the top is golden brown.

6. Garnish and Serve:

  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a burst of color.

Tips:

  • You can make this casserole ahead of time by preparing it the night before and refrigerating it. Bake it in the morning when ready to serve.
  • For extra flavor, try adding sautéed onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms to the sausage mixture.
  • You can substitute the sausage with bacon or ham if preferred.
