BBQ Brisket Cheesesteaks

Posted on April 5, 2025
BBQ Brisket Cheesesteaks are a mouthwatering combination of tender BBQ brisket and gooey, melty cheese, all sandwiched in a soft, toasted hoagie roll. It’s a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, with the smoky richness of brisket and the tang of BBQ sauce. Here’s how you can make them:

BBQ Brisket Cheesesteaks Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked BBQ brisket (shredded or sliced thin)

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls (preferably soft and fresh)

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for spreading on the rolls)

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded (or a mix of provolone and mozzarella)

  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite variety)

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Olive oil (for cooking the veggies)

Instructions:

1. Sauté the Vegetables:

  • Heat a little olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add the onion and bell pepper (if using), and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.

  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant. Season with salt and pepper, then remove the veggies from the skillet and set aside.

2. Prepare the BBQ Brisket:

  • In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if necessary and bring it to medium-high heat.

  • Add the BBQ brisket (shredded or thinly sliced) to the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes, allowing it to get a little crispy on the edges.

  • Stir in the BBQ sauce and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is well-coated and heated through. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

3. Toast the Rolls:

  • While the brisket is simmering, spread butter on the inside of each hoagie roll.

  • Toast the rolls in a separate skillet or under the broiler until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the edges.

4. Assemble the Cheesesteaks:

  • Once the rolls are toasted, layer them with the BBQ brisket mixture.

  • Top the brisket with the sautéed onions and peppers.

  • Pile on the shredded provolone cheese (or a mix of provolone and mozzarella) and spread it out evenly over the brisket.

5. Melt the Cheese:

  • Return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet (or place them under the broiler) and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

6. Serve:

  • Remove the cheesesteaks from the skillet or broiler and serve immediately. You can drizzle with extra BBQ sauce or add some pickled jalapeños for extra flavor and a little heat.

Tips:

  • Use leftover brisket: If you have leftover brisket from a BBQ, this recipe is perfect for repurposing it. Just reheat it with some BBQ sauce.

  • Customize the cheese: While provolone is classic, you can use other cheeses like cheddar, American, or even pepper jack for a spicier version.

  • Grilled vegetables: For a more flavorful twist, you can grill the onions and peppers instead of sautéing them.

  • Add some spice: If you like a kick, throw in some pickled jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce on top.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Fries or Onion Rings: Serve with crispy fries, onion rings, or even sweet potato fries for a complete meal.

  • Coleslaw: A side of tangy coleslaw pairs perfectly with the smoky, savory flavors of the brisket.

These BBQ Brisket Cheesesteaks are the ultimate fusion of flavors and textures: smoky, tender brisket, savory melted cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and tangy BBQ sauce. They’re perfect for a weekend treat, a game day meal, or any time you’re craving something hearty and satisfying.

Are you planning to make these for a party or just for a cozy dinner at home?
