Posted on July 7, 2025
Here’s a delicious and easy Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe—crispy chicken baked in a tangy, sticky homemade sauce. It tastes just like takeout but is made right at home with simple ingredients!

🍗 Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts (cut into bite-sized pieces)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 cup cornstarch

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (for pan-frying)

For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup distilled white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)

  • ¼ cup ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thicker sauce)

🔥 Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).

  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Prepare and Fry Chicken:

  • Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper.

  • Dredge each piece in cornstarch, then dip in beaten eggs.

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Quickly brown chicken on both sides (do not cook through fully).

  • Transfer browned chicken to the baking dish.

3. Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together:
sugar, vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  • (Optional: For thicker sauce, stir in cornstarch slurry.)

4. Bake the Chicken:

  • Pour sauce evenly over the chicken in the baking dish.

  • Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, turning the chicken once or twice during baking to fully coat in sauce.

🍚 Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve over steamed white rice, fried rice, or noodles.

  • Add a side of steamed broccoli or stir-fried vegetables.

📝 Tips:

  • You can add pineapple chunks, bell peppers, or even onions to the baking dish for extra flavor.

  • For a shortcut, skip pan-frying and bake coated raw chicken with the sauce (though it won’t be as crispy).
