Amish Onion Fritters

Posted on June 21, 2025

Here’s a classic and comforting recipe for Amish Onion Fritters—crispy, golden bites packed with sweet onion flavor. They’re easy to make and perfect as a snack, side dish, or appetizer.

🧅 Amish Onion Fritters

🕒 Prep Time: 10 minutes

🕒 Cook Time: 15 minutes

🍽️ Servings: About 12 fritters

✅ Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp cornmeal (for crunch, optional)

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ cup milk

  • 2–3 cups finely chopped sweet onions (like Vidalia or yellow onions)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal (if using), sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

    • Stir in milk to form a thick batter.

    • Fold in chopped onions until evenly coated.

  2. Heat the Oil:

    • Pour oil into a large skillet (about ½ inch deep) and heat over medium heat until shimmering. Test with a small bit of batter—it should sizzle.

  3. Fry the Fritters:

    • Drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil, flattening slightly with the back of a spoon.

    • Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

    • Drain on paper towels.

  4. Serve:

    • Serve warm with sour cream, ranch dressing, or spicy ketchup.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra crispy edges, make the batter slightly thinner and spread the fritters flatter in the pan.

  • Add a pinch of paprika or cayenne for a mild kick.

  • These reheat well in the oven or air fryer.
