Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Posted on January 17, 2025

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty dish that combines juicy hamburger patties with a flavorful onion gravy, baked to perfection. It’s a simple, one-pan meal that’s perfect for a family dinner. The dish is reminiscent of a classic “smothered” steak, with savory flavors and a rich gravy, served over mashed potatoes, rice, or with a side of vegetables.

Here’s how you can make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake:

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon flour (to thicken)
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, but don’t overwork the meat to keep the patties tender.
  • Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval or round patties, depending on your preferred size.
2. Cook the Patties:
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the hamburger patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
3. Prepare the Gravy:
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened and slightly browned.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to make a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  • Slowly add the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until it thickens.
4. Bake the Dish:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a greased baking dish, place the cooked hamburger patties in a single layer. Pour the onion gravy over the top of the patties, making sure they are well-covered.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20-25 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
5. Serve:
  • Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
  • Serve the hamburger steak bake with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of steamed vegetables to complete the meal.

Tips for Success:

  • Customizing the Gravy: You can add mushrooms or bell peppers to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • Tender Hamburger Patties: Don’t overwork the meat when mixing the ingredients to keep the patties tender and juicy.
  • Thicker Gravy: If you like thicker gravy, add a little more flour to the skillet when making the roux or simmer the gravy longer to reduce it.

Enjoy!

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, family-friendly dish with rich, savory flavors. It’s a perfect weeknight dinner that’s filling and satisfying for all!
