Old-Fashioned Pancakes

Posted on February 4, 2025

Old-Fashioned Pancakes are the classic, fluffy breakfast treat that everyone loves! Made with simple pantry ingredients, this recipe delivers pancakes with a soft, light texture and a delicious flavor. Whether you top them with syrup, berries, or whipped cream, these pancakes are a great way to start your day!

Old-Fashioned Pancakes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk (whole milk or any milk of your choice)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (plus more for the pan)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

1. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

2. Mix Wet Ingredients:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract (if using).

3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spoon or whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – it’s okay if the batter is a little lumpy. Overmixing can make the pancakes tough.

4. Preheat the Pan:

  • Heat a griddle or nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add a small amount of butter or oil to coat the surface.
  • To check if the pan is hot enough, drop a small amount of water onto it. If it sizzles, it’s ready.

5. Cook the Pancakes:

  • For each pancake, pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan. Use the back of a spoon to spread the batter into a circle if needed.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until small bubbles form on the surface of the pancake and the edges start to look set. Flip the pancake carefully and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side, or until golden brown.

6. Serve:

  • Remove the pancakes from the pan and keep warm while you cook the rest of the pancakes. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream, or butter.

Tips:

  • Consistency: If the batter is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Flavor Add-ins: For a twist, you can add chocolate chips, blueberries, or sliced bananas to the batter right before cooking.
  • Keeping Warm: If you’re making a large batch, keep cooked pancakes warm in a 200°F (90°C) oven on a baking sheet while you finish cooking the rest.
  • Texture: For fluffier pancakes, let the batter rest for 5-10 minutes before cooking. This helps the baking powder work and makes them puff up.

These Old-Fashioned Pancakes are soft, light, and perfect for any breakfast or brunch occasion. Their simplicity makes them a blank canvas for all sorts of toppings and mix-ins, so feel free to get creative! Enjoy!
