Avocado Toast Recipe

Posted on February 1, 2025

Avocado toast is a simple, healthy, and delicious breakfast or snack! Here’s a basic recipe, plus a few ideas for delicious toppings to take it to the next level.

Basic Avocado Toast Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 slices of your favorite bread (sourdough, whole grain, or rye work well)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for drizzling)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
  • 1/2 lemon (for juice)

Instructions:

  1. Toast the bread:
    • Toast the slices of bread to your desired level of crispness. You can use a toaster, a pan on the stovetop, or even a grill for a little extra flavor.
  2. Prepare the avocado:
    • While the bread is toasting, cut the avocado in half. Remove the pit and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
    • Mash the avocado with a fork until smooth or leave it a little chunky, depending on your preference.
    • Squeeze in a bit of fresh lemon juice to add brightness and prevent browning. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Assemble the toast:
    • Spread the mashed avocado generously onto each slice of toasted bread.
    • Optionally, drizzle with a bit of olive oil for richness, and sprinkle with red pepper flakes if you like a little spice.
  4. Serve:
    • Enjoy as-is or get creative with your toppings!

Topping Ideas:

  • Fried egg: Top with a fried egg for extra protein. Sunny side up or poached are perfect for a runny yolk!
  • Tomato and basil: Sliced cherry tomatoes and fresh basil make a refreshing and vibrant addition.
  • Feta or goat cheese: Crumbled feta or goat cheese adds a tangy, creamy element.
  • Smoked salmon: A couple of slices of smoked salmon turn this into a more substantial meal.
  • Everything bagel seasoning: A sprinkle of this popular seasoning mix adds tons of flavor—garlic, onion, sesame, and poppy seeds.
  • Microgreens or arugula: For a peppery bite, fresh greens are a great touch.

Tips:

  • Ripeness of the avocado: Make sure your avocado is ripe for the best texture—if it’s too firm, it’ll be hard to mash; if it’s overripe, it might be too mushy.
  • Add garlic or spices: For a little extra flavor, you can rub the toast with a cut garlic clove before spreading the avocado. Or sprinkle with cumin or smoked paprika for a unique twist.

This basic avocado toast recipe is simple but customizable. Let me know if you’d like more ideas or have any special preferences!
